    Dear Dr. Pill,

Can you try complimenting me, and I’ll test that theory?

    Sincerely,

Because it is easier. If I am ugly/stranger/introvert and you compliment me, I will feel suspicious/awkward.

Rejecting compliments is a defense mechanism for those who view compliments as "too much attention" than they're accustomed to.

To lighten the load, the receiver will either shift focus to another topic, rather than acknowledging the compliment or, reject the compliment and even go as far out to say a demeaning comment about themselves to counterbalance that very compliment.

Reasons are plenty, low self esteem as well as complete distrust of other people's evaluations of us. Hence the disapproval/rejection for compliments and even questions such as "do actually like it?"
